Broadway Inclusion Project wins an Emmy!

The ballet collaborative, The Black Iris Project, received a 2022 New York Emmy Award for its short film WILD: These walls can talk, which was developed at Open Jar Studios.

Each year Open Jar Studios awards 500 hours of studio space to Black, Indigenous and other marginalized artists in order to develop new works, allow under-represented artists to develop and show work or even start new businesses through the BROADWAY INCLUSION PROJECT. “It’s imperative that time and space is made available for artists of color, “ said Jeff Whiting, owner of Open Jar Studios, “and it’s so thrilling to see this project getting the recognition it deserves.”

Founded in 2016 by choreographer Jeremy McQueen, The Black Iris Project is a ballet collaborative and education vehicle which creates new, relevant classical and contemporary ballet works that celebrate diversity and Black history. Based in New York City, the project hosts a team of predominantly artists of color delivering cross-discipline and wholly original works.

“With "WILD" specifically - which I view as a tough work centered around healing, says McQueen, “we wanted to continue to uplift diversified voices while breaking down the ivory silos and pillars so that we not only have a seat at the table and our work on the table, but to ensure that the voices of the voiceless are heard and amplified.”

The application for new projects at The Broadway Inclusion Project is now open: www.openjarstudios.com/broadway-inclusion
